WoW's Showcase Sponsors ROCKED the MOCK (Wedding, that is)!
Posted By Victoria WoW June 21st, 2013
When was the last time you attended a networking event that introduced you to a cultural ritual you knew little about, featured a verified Hindu priest as the guest speaker, and had you on the dance floor by the end of the event? Unless you attended WoW's June event "Tony & Tajinder's Wedding", we're going to guess the answer is...ummmm...never.
The off-Broadway smash hit "Tony & Tina's Wedding", a play that redefined audience participation, was the inspiration for this unique event. Audience members didn't just observe the play as voyeurs; they were expected to play the parts of wedding guests, and take part in all the theatrics of a raucous Italian wedding including the ceremony and reception. Food, drink and merriment were all included as part of the experience.
Such was the theme for Women of Weddings' most recent event. A replica Hindu wedding celebration took place at the stunning BW Premier Prestige Oceanfront Resort in Sooke, complete with a cast that included a gorgeous bride and her handsome groom, both couple's parents, and an actual Hindu priest known as Pandit Ji. Over 50 WoW members and newcomers, whom we thank sincerely for making the extended commute, filled in the rest of the cast. As the photos will prove, a delightful time was had by all.
Just in case the wedding rites had any resonating legal or emotional binding, at least the actors who portrayed the bride and groom are already steadfastly committed. Real-life couple Sunny & Sareena, acquaintances of WoW Founder Sharon Rai, joined us from across the Strait of Juan de Fuca to participate in our very first WoW mock wedding. Everyone agreed they were radiant as our Tony & Tina. The stunning couple saw this event as a dress rehearsal for their upcoming nuptials in Winter 2014.
But it truly was our team of Showcase Sponsors who deserve all the credit for pulling off such an ambitious and entertaining spectacle.
The talented Hardip Johal of Magical Moments Decorating coordinated all the details for this magical event, including inviting beloved members of the local Hindu community to stand in as the couple's parents, and providing the gorgeous décor that adorned the venue.
Krista Clarke, Convention and Catering Manager for BW Premier Prestige Oceanfront Resort, also helped to organize the event. She and Hardip oversaw the venue planning, and Krista directed her catering team to create contemporary interpretations of traditional Indian cuisine to indulge the guests. Krista hosted a very well-attended tour of the hotel that features breathtaking views of Sooke's picturesque harbour and well-appointed luxury suites.
Krista mentioned on Facebook immediately after this event: "What a wonderful event we had on Tuesday! Thank you to all that participated in hosting and to our special guests for educating us. I could not be happier, AND, I have already had a booking inquiry as a result! I couldn’t be happier to be a member of this organization. I am truly WOW’d! Thanks ladies!"
The gorgeous wedding cake was created by Lora Lonesberry of Creating Occasions. Guests were raving that the cake, enveloped in divine vanilla buttercream, was as delicious as it was beautiful. Lora also gifted guests with specially-designed sugar cookies shaped as shells in honour of this event, subtitled "WoW'ed by the Sea."
The bride's exquisite bouquet was provided by Karen Stones from A Sea of Bloom. Based in Sooke, our featured florist didn’t have far to come to show off her glorious floral creations. Karen was also inspired to create the floral floor mats that embellished the wedding's walkway.
Sharon Rai of Sharon Rai Hair & Makeup Artistry arrived just in time from a destination wedding in the Caribbean to make sure "Tajinder" and her groom "Tony" looked perfect for WoW's June wedding event. Not only did Sharon style the bride's hair and makeup, she also provided the ornate clothing the couple wore. "Tajinder's" complete ensemble was what Sharon wore for her own wedding three years ago; the unique outfit that features elaborately decorated pants rather than the traditional sari is known as a sharara. "Tony's" ornamental waistcoat is called an achkan, and was worn by Sharon's husband.
The Showcase Sponsor team also included Adrienne Jopp from The Paper Suite, who assisted in creating the overall theme of the spectacular event.
Finally, Emmy-Lou McMillan from E/A Photo was the event's official photographer extraordinaire. Her awe-inspiring shots are featured throughout this post. Emmy enthusiastically commented "Wow- that was such a great event on Tuesday. Based on the expressions on people's faces in the photos I think people really enjoyed themselves."
The photos do indeed speak for themselves, and for the quality of the sponsors who dared to envision such a fantastic event. All who attended will most certainly agree: WoW is not your average networking group. This is experiential business building at its finest.
Many thanks again to all who made this event so successful. See you in July. We bet you can't wait to see what WoW thinks of next!
PS Sandy Yoachim from Details won the extravagant prize basket, and April Readie from Love Notes caught the bouquet. Congratulations, ladies!
