Sunshine, speeches, and speed networking!

Posted By Victoria WoW May 22nd, 2014

With a breathtaking view of Victoria's Inner Harbour and glorious weather to boot, WoW's May event felt a bit like we were playing hooky from work! From the sun-drenched penthouse terrace at the Inn at Laurel Point, WoW Members and our guests got to know one another even better. We got "engaged" with one another, so to speak.

The WoW Community had the opportunity to experience first-hand the Inn at Laurel Point's spectacular penthouse suite. Everyone agreed this would be a romantic getaway for any bride and groom to spend their first night of wedded bliss. The penthouse would also make an ideal location for the perfect proposal, an intimate wedding or an engagement party. Many thanks to Deanna McCollum Photography for her lovely photos of the setting and the event, featured throughout this post.

The Inn at Laurel Point's Senior Event Manager Jennifier Scigliano and her stellar team hosted Women of Weddings with a divine spread of breakfast treats including pastries and healthy smoothies. We nibbled and sipped while we reconnected with our colleagues.

Following our informal networking, we settled in to listen to Sarah Daviau from Piece of Cake Communications share her insights for crafting a spot-on elevator pitch.

Sarah emphasized that your elevator pitch needs to be brief yet engaging. She advised us to make sure you know your target market, and to keep them in mind when crafting your pitch. Sarah recommends offering a condensed summary of your products/services in a way that highlights your unique point of difference, and to offer some kind of "hook". Your hook is a statement that creates some intrigue; your hook will spark your listener's interest, and encourage them to inquire further, which is the ultimate goal. Finally, Sarah suggests rehearsing your pitch for people who will provide you with honest feedback

Sarah generously offered to Members in attendance a review of your elevator pitches. Email Sarah at "pieceofcakecommunications@yahoo.ca"

Jennifer Scigliano can be seen in the photos below introducing our guest, and welcoming WoW to the hotel's most luxurious suite.

After Sarah's presentation, we applied her smart tips to our own pitches. We participated in several rounds of speed networking, in which our focus was to offer specific feedback to the speaker on her pitch. WoW distributed useful feedback forms so that we could collect ideas from our colleagues. We took advantage of the views as spread out all over the beautiful penthouse to get to "work".

We wrapped up our May event by touring the stunning grounds, vistas and amenities of the Inn at Laurel Point. Everyone got to take home a little package of goodies. A few days later,  M&M Tailoring & AlterationsMaya Gabrovska's business card was drawn to win May's "Let's Get Engaged" grand prize, which included:

  • A Gift Certificate for a one hour 'engaging' session with Sarah Daviau of Piece of Cake Communications
  • A romantic One Night Stay in a Studio Suite at the Inn at Laurel Point
  • An 'Engagement' Photography Session with Deanna McCollum Photography

Maya says that "'The WoW Website refers a lot of clients to me" and that her membership to WoW has enhanced her relationships with other businesses in the wedding industry. "This has benefited me by other businesses in the industry knowing about me and my business."
