How did your company get started? How did you get into your field of expertise?
I was laid off from my job in 2010 at a fashion accessories wholesaler and realized I really missed sewing and designing. While searching for jobs on Craigslist I responded to someone wanting to have their wedding dress made. I met her at a Starbucks with no clue where to begin with a consult having not done it before. I didn’t get the job, but it got me determined to make a plan and start Elise Tonn Designs. I have been sewing for a long time, since I was little when my Grandmother Elise taught me to sew. Dresses were something I always love to design and make, I wanted to make ones for celebrities on the red carpet. It wasn’t until after design school and I met my know husband that I really fell in love with bridal.
What are you most passionate about professionally?
What most excites you about your business & the contribution you can make?
Without my passion for sewing I don’t think I’d be where I am. For some designers they hate to sew, get frustrated and contract it out. Me personally, I love it, working with my hands and creating something from nothing is very fulfilling. I’m so happy to have the skill and patience to be able to add that personal touch to a garment that’s incredibly special, probably the most special.
What makes your business unique?
I pretty much specialize in unique! A themed gown, vintage-inspired, you name it… each dress is one-of-a-kind. I offer brides a personal experience when designing their gown. It’s all about them and their big day, as it should be!
What inspiring quote best describes your business or your passion for brides, weddings, love, etc.?
“Beauty begins the moment you decide to be yourself.” Coco Chanel, of course.
What was the most rare/interesting/quirky request you've had from a bride or groom? How did you make it happen for them?
Right now I’m designing a Game of Thrones inspired wedding gown!
What would your dream wedding include? Even if you have already had yours, what would you have changed?
There are some pretty awesome themed wedding ideas, and if I were to do it again I’d do that. Just have to choose between Gatsby or Futuristic Glam….
Describe a situation or experience in your work that you are most proud of, that you found to be rewarding, inspiring or even funny…
Every dress I complete I always says its my new favorite… But this year I think I was most proud that one of my past sewing students has graduated and wants to continue in the industry with post-secondary. That was a great feeling! She’ll be helping me with my last projects of the summer.
What was the last thing that brought tears to your eyes?
I cry at movies a lot… but never at a gown on screen. That was until I saw Cinderella (live-action) this year, I was awed at that blue dress it made me weep! Now that’s how every bride should feel when she enters the room.
What was the last thing that made you laugh out loud?
My husband always makes me laugh.
Finish this sentence…”Your wedding is the first step. But to make a marriage last…”
Laugh and don’t take things too seriously.
