Royal Roads University became a public educational institution in 1995. Lucky for us, Hatley Castle was part of the landscape and we had the opportunity to showcase it to the world!

Royal Roads University is more than an institution of education, it is a hidden gem on Vancouver Island rich in Canadian history.

Royal Roads University is located on Hatley Park National Historic Site, and was home to James Dunsmuir, former Premier of British Columbia, Lieutenant Governor, and coal baron. What inspiring quote best describes your business or your passion for brides, weddings, love, etc.?
"Where dreams come true!"
What was the most rare/interesting/quirky request you’ve had from a bride or groom?
How did you make it happen for them?
The bridal party was getting ready for the processional and the bride asked ME for their marriage certificate, which is not something we provide. Luckily, for her the marriage officiant had one stored at his home! The groom’s father was a mayor in the states and was legally able to perform the ceremony and the BC marriage officiant was required for the legal portion of the ceremony. The ceremony started on time and by the time the marriage officiant returned it was time to sign their lives away.
What would your dream wedding include? Even if you have already had yours, what would you have changed?
I would choose to get married during Christmas at Hatley Castle with “harvest/family” seating
Describe a situation or experience in your work that you are most proud of, that you found to be rewarding, inspiring or even funny…
There is something about this magical place that leaves every couple feeling like they are living in a fairytale.
What was the last thing that brought tears to your eyes?
Last summer we had a Hungarian Muslim bride marry a Japanese Christian groom. At the ceremony they had three interpreters, one for Japanese, one for Hungarian and one for the deaf grandparents on the brides side. The people were so respectful and silent, as the interpreter signed, that I swear you could hear the dragon flies hovering over the flowers.
What was the last thing that made you laugh out loud?
Our clients had chosen to tent the terrace lawn and there was a “sauna” effect. The mother of the bride went onto her hands and knees to feel the grass. She was not impressed and came up to me and asked me how I was going to dry the grass for her daughter’s reception! She actually thought I had a humungous blow dryer!
