How did your company get started? How did you get into your field of expertise?
I have been mesmerized with brides since I was a little girl. To me they were as close as I could get to a princess, and I couldn’t wait until my own wedding day. When my older sister got married, I remember being enthralled watching the makeup artist transform her into a glamorous bride, and I knew then that I wanted to become a professional makeup artist. Even though my parents expected me to pursue a more traditional career, I insisted I could create a business out of my passion. They could not deny my entrepreneurial spirit, which was modelled after their own, and they chose to support my dream. I founded SHARON RAI in 2008 with a single goal: to provide luxury on-location and in-studio hair and makeup experiences for brides. With this single-minded focus, I have earned my reputation as Canada's premier bridal hair & makeup artist.
What are you most passionate about professionally?
What most excites you about your business & the contribution you can make?
I am honored to be able to work with brides, I take great pride in creating an extraordinary experience for each of them and to be included on the most special day of their life. It’s been 9 years since I worked on my first wedding, each one still has the same excitement for me – I still get those butterflies in my stomach. At SHARON RAI we are passionate about creating a luxurious experience for all our brides, and we take care of all her wedding beauty rituals from the moment she says “I will” to the moment she says “I do.”
What makes your business unique?
At SHARON RAI we are passionate about enabling our brides to look and feel simply radiant. Every member of the SR Team is 100% committed to creating an unforgettable experience for both Western and South Asian Brides, and we define our services as first-class luxury from start to finish. Our top priority is to make sure that our Brides can simply enjoy the day in a relaxed, stress-free environment, while we take care of every detail – even the ones they haven’t thought of. We like to think of ourselves as her back-up bridal party, acting as honourary bridesmaids in any way we see is needed, and exceeding her expectations on every level.
What inspiring quote best describes your business or your passion for brides, weddings, love, etc.?
"The ordinary are paid to do their work. The extraordinary are paid to master their craft."
What was the most rare/interesting/quirky request you’ve had from a bride or groom?
How did you make it happen for them?
One of my grooms discovered he didn’t fit into his Armani dress shirt for his reception. This created last-minute panic. We frantically phoned around, but no stores were open except for Walmart – not exactly an ideal place to buy a shirt for a wedding. With no other options available at such short notice, I decided on a solution to cut a V out of the back of the shirt. I gave him instructions to leave his dress jacket on all evening. That was a good reminder to always have a full wedding day preview beforehand to make sure all your clothes fit you!
What would your dream wedding include? Even if you have already had yours, what would you have changed?
My wedding was in 2010, and took place in Port Alberni, and it was my dream wedding with over 700 guests. My husband and I planned it for a year and half, I researched all my vendors, and hired the best of the best. Every anniversary, we take out our wedding highlight video and photographs, and re-live the moment. I am still in love with all the details, and would not have changed a thing.
Describe a situation or experience in your work that you are most proud of, that you found to be rewarding, inspiring or even funny…
I attended the prestigious 2014 Canadian Wedding Industry Awards in December, I was nominated with the best Makeup Artists in Canada, I was grateful to be mentioned in such esteemed company. It was such an amazing feeling to hear my name as the winner! Even more amazing was hearing the excitement in the voice of the host when she read my name again for the best hairstylist in Canada, it was a double win!
What was the last thing that brought tears to your eyes?
I had a Wedding Day Preview with one of my brides, Kelsey, this is a full trial of hair, makeup and styling done in-studio a month before the wedding. I finished her hair and makeup, placed her jewellery and veil, helped her into her dress and laced it. She looked in the mirror, and started crying, she said it was perfect, and she loved it, and gave me a hug, which then brought tears to my eyes. Its moments like this that reminds me of why I started Sharon Rai Hair & Makeup Artistry.
What was the last thing that made you laugh out loud?
My one year old daughter, Naiva, learned how to walk a few months ago. I was visiting my parents in Port Alberni, and I told my mom to watch her for a second, as I was going through my purse to find my keys, well in a few minutes, my mom says to me "Naiva's in the washroom". I ran into the washroom to see Naiva fishing my cell phone out of the toilet, even though my cell phone was dead, the look on her face was so funny and definitely made me laugh out loud.
Finish this sentence…"Your wedding is the first step. But to make a marriage last…"
You must keep the lightbulb lit. A relationship is like a house. When a lightbulb burns out you do not go and buy a new house, you fix the lightbulb.
